Beyond Expectations: The 6th Gen Mitsubishi Triton L200 is Here

When it comes to midsize pickup trucks, the Hilux has long been a dominant player. However, there's another renowned Japanese model that has been making its mark globally for decades - the Mitsubishi Triton, also known as L200. With a production history dating back to 1978 and over 5.6 million units sold worldwide, the Triton holds significant importance in the pickup truck segment, especially in Oceania, African, and ASEAN markets. Now, Mitsubishi has unveiled the highly anticipated 6th generation of the Triton, bringing a brand new platform, enhanced exterior, and revamped interior to the table.

A Rugged Exterior Redefining the Segment

After nearly a decade of production, the 6th gen Mitsubishi Triton has undergone a major makeover. The new model boasts a larger and wider body compared to its predecessor, available in three configurations: Double Cabin, Club Cabin (two-door single cabin with storage space behind the front seat), and the traditional Single Cabin. The double cab version is now 35mm longer, 75mm wider, and has a 45mm longer wheelbase than the Hilux double cab, making it one of the most spacious offerings in the segment.

Taking inspiration from Mitsubishi's Dynamic Shield design philosophy, the exterior sports a rugged, boxy, and rectangular profile. The front grille is more perpendicular and rectangular, adorned with horizontal slats and complemented by larger split headlights. Unique slim L-shaped three-step LED DRLs add a distinctive touch between the hood and headlights. The side profile features larger rectangular fender flares, emphasizing the Triton's rugged and imposing stance.

Mitsubishi has implemented bold and wide character lines on the lower portion of the side body panels, ensuring a powerful presence on the road. The rear of the Triton showcases new large T-shaped LED taillights, accompanied by an integrated spoiler for a sporty rear end look. The cargo bed now boasts a lower height for easy loading and unloading, and an improved damper system ensures smooth, single-handed tailgate operation. Mitsubishi offers a range of accessories for the cargo bed, including bed-liners, bed covers, and sports bars.

A Crossover-Inspired Interior

Inside the Triton's cabin, Mitsubishi introduces the Horizontal Axis concept, featuring a horizontal and rectangular geometric layout. Drawing inspiration from the Mitsubishi Outlander crossover, the interior exudes a familiar vibe with a central infotainment screen, a digital driver information display, and a multifunctional steering wheel. The HVAC controls are thoughtfully laid out with a digital display, ensuring ease of use.

The interior boasts a spacious and comfortable crossover-like ambiance, featuring soft-touch materials and ample storage spaces. With its promise of best-in-class interior space and comfort, the Triton aims to enhance the driving experience for both driver and passengers. Mitsubishi Connect, a remote-control feature utilizing a smartphone application, allows users to operate the engine, HVAC, and lighting controls with ease. In terms of safety, the new model comes equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features and front side airbags, while Active Stability and Traction Control are standard across all variants.

Powerful Performance and Enhanced Fuel Efficiency

Under the hood, the all-new Mitsubishi Triton features a single 16-valve 2.4L inline turbo diesel engine, marked as the DOHC 4N16. This powertrain boasts improvements over the previous 4N15 engine, with enhancements to the intercooler, turbocharger, and fuel injector. The result is an impressive blend of performance and fuel economy.

Buyers have the option to choose from three power bands, depending on their preferences. The base version offers 148HP and 330NM of torque, while the second option delivers 181HP and 430NM of torque. For those seeking more power, the most potent variant boasts 201HP and 470NM of torque, exclusively available with an automatic transmission. Both manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions are available, with the automatic featuring a modern shift-by-wire system for smoother gear shifts.

The new Triton offers both 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive options, catering to a wide range of driving needs and preferences.

With the unveiling of the all-new 6th gen Mitsubishi Triton L200, Mitsubishi aims to redefine excellence in the pickup truck segment. Boasting a rugged exterior design, a crossover-inspired interior, and powerful performance enhancements, the Triton is set to impress drivers worldwide. Whether for work or play, the Triton's versatility and robust capabilities make it a formidable contender among midsize pickup trucks. As it hits the global markets, the new Triton is expected to continue the legacy of its predecessors, offering reliable performance and a comfortable driving experience to pickup truck enthusiasts around the globe.
